The first thing that stands out is the recording quality. Recorded at True Fury in El Paso with engineer Hector Meza, this EP consistently slaps and is a treat to listen to. The drums hit hard, the vocals sit clearly in the mix, the guitars cut through, the bass has real weight, and the dynamics give every track room to breathe.

Track 1: 9mm Haircut

The EP’s opener is a perfect introduction to what Call It Lost is bringing to the table. A quick intro riff gives way to powerful vocals and an equally powerful drop, setting the tone immediately. From there, the band keeps the energy high with catchy hooks, blistering breakdowns, and layered harmonies that let Josh and Shayne’s screams and cleans play off each other without stepping on the song.

Track 2: Bounce Back

After getting punched, or maybe shot, in the face by “9mm Haircut,” “Bounce Back” pulls things into a calmer place with an ethereal intro riff from guitarists Robin and Raymond. It gives you a false sense of security before the song rips back into controlled chaos. For me, this is the catchiest track on the EP. It blends brutal and beautiful in a way that feels instantly playlist ready.

Track 3: Change Your Mind

Frantic riffs open into one of the slickest bass lines on the release. Sebastian rides the pocket while still standing out, driving the track forward without overplaying. The song really shines in the middle, where a tom-led breakdown from drummer Jeremiah sits underneath delicate clean vocals and an a cappella section that builds perfectly into the screaming outro.

Track 4: Who’s Car Are We Taking?

The shortest track on the EP fits right in with the rest of the release. Similar to “Bounce Back,” “Who’s Car Are We Taking?” feels built to be a single, with lyrics that are almost guaranteed to be screamed back at upcoming shows. My only complaint is that it ends right as you’re fully locked in. That’s what the repeat button is for, I suppose.

Track 5: Let’s TAAKA ’Bout It

I’m sure the track title is an inside joke I’m not privy to, but that does not make it any less enjoyable. If “9mm Haircut” is the perfect opener, “Let’s TAAKA ’Bout It” does exactly what a closer should do. Gang vocals, sing-along hooks, huge instrumentation, and the widest range of sounds on the release make it one of the EP’s strongest moments. It is a very close second favorite for me on withyourheart*.

Summary

This release fucks. Full stop.

It is genuinely exciting to hear a recording of this caliber from a local act. The only selfish criticism I have is that I wish it was longer. A deluxe version with a few softer tracks would be a perfect complement, especially because the pieces are clearly already there. Call It Lost has the sound, range, and confidence to stretch across the full spectrum of post-hardcore without losing their identity.

I’m eager to hear what comes next.

Season 1 of Las Cruces Rocks is officially done.

Over the last three months, the show covered more than 500 miles, about 11 hours of content, and a lot of ground in general. We got to sit down with artists, hear stories, air performances, and put some real focus on the people making noise in and around Las Cruces. For a first season, I am really proud of what we pulled off.

Now we are in The Offseason.

That does not mean everything stops. It just means I get a second to breathe, tighten things up, and get ready for what is next. Season 2 is going to open the show up a bit more. Along with artists and bands, I want to spend more time talking to the people and places that help keep a local scene alive: venues, promoters, studios, and the other support systems around it that do not always get enough attention.

On a personal level, I have two huge things right in front of me. First, I am getting married. During the week of April 13 through 19, I will be in Las Vegas for the wedding, and while I am gone we will be reairing the first episode of Season 1 featuring sunihateyou. It felt like a good way to loop back to where the season started while I am out.

The other big thing is LCR Fest on May 30. Once I get back, a lot of my time is going to be spent getting that fully locked in. That means finishing promo videos, flyers, sponsor and vendor coordination, partnerships, and all the other behind-the-scenes work that goes into getting something like this off the ground the right way.

We will still have a few offseason episodes before Season 2 starts up sometime in May, so this is not a disappearance. It is more like a reset. A little breathing room, a little planning, and then right back at it.

I am really excited about the next few weeks.

As we wind down our first season of Las Cruces Rocks, I wanted to take some time to reflect on the journey that got us here.

Around Christmas, I was at the farmers market and happened to come across KTAL-LP’s booth, where Walt and Jennifer from the station were set up. After talking with them for a bit about the records they had for sale, they floated the idea of me hosting my own show. I have plenty of experience in radio, podcasting, and just about anything involving microphones and media, but until then, I had not really considered jumping back into it.

Inspired, I went home, recorded a demo for the show, and submitted it to the station. A week passed, and I started to wonder whether they were interested, so I called to check in. To my surprise, my pitch had been a hit, and I soon began the process of getting the show on the air.

I went through onboarding with Minerva, training with the station’s tech guru, Dean, and recorded my first on-air promo with The Buzzman, a veteran of community radio. From there, they turned me loose on the board, and I was off to the races with barely any time to plan what I was going to do.

Having been something of a hermit over the last few years, one of the things that got me out of the house was my son and his friends, his bandmates in sunihateyou. Through them, I started meeting bands in the area and building a network of people I could tap into for content.

I recorded my first interview for the show in my home office with SIHY, along with a performance at their practice space. From there, I began reaching out to other local bands, and to my surprise, most of the ones I contacted were interested in being on the show. That outreach set into motion three weeks of back-to-back recordings, which became the content you heard over the last few months of this season.

Hundreds of miles traveled later, I had hours of content that I mixed, edited, and scheduled to air each week, all the way through our finale on April 1. Amoral Minds, Father Wolf, Fear of Tradition, Death Benefits, Worm Ceiling, Funeral Joke, Jane Like Fire, The Anhedonians, and Know//Suffer were all kind enough to invite me and my crew into their spaces so we could capture intimate performances and candid interviews. I am honored and humbled by their hospitality and their willingness to participate in this effort to amplify the local scene.

By the end of March and into April, I had planned to take a break from recording and begin gearing up for a pivot into a new topic for season two. But the overwhelming desire I kept hearing from the bands, a desire to play more shows in Cruces, inspired me to end this season with a bang. From that, LCR Fest was born.

The idea was simple in concept, but ambitious in execution: get all ten of the bands from the first season together for a benefit show for the station. Coordinating schedules, finding a venue, and assembling a crew turned out to be a massive undertaking.

But persistence, and a real desire to make it happen, won out. Now we have what is shaping up to be one of Las Cruces’ biggest and best local music festivals on the calendar for May 30 at The Destination, an incredible venue here in town that shares my desire to provide a home for bands that want to play in Las Cruces.

As I write this, we have already sold out our first drop of tickets and are well on our way to a successful show. It is still wild to me that just a few months ago, none of this was even under consideration. If it had not been for a last-minute holiday shopping trip to the market, I would not be sitting here writing this right now.

To the station, the bands, my crew, and my family, thank you. You have given me purpose and motivation to create something that keeps getting better and better. I am beyond excited for what the future holds for this show and for this scene, and I am deeply grateful to everyone I have met along the way who has helped prove that Las Cruces Rocks.
